What Is A Graphics Card?

A graphics card is a single unit of hardware that is installed in your computer which produces the images that you see on your computer monitor.  A graphics card can cost anywhere from $20.00 right up to $2,500.00, depending on the capabilities and applications.

You will need to ensure, before buying a graphics card that it will display the best resolution that your monitor is capable of supporting.  You also need to know how much memory you have in your computer.  Your graphics card works very hard to render the images on your screen.  Graphics files contain large amounts of data that need to be processed by your video card and the speed at which it processes this data will be evident once you have installed it.

Faster graphics cards have resident memory chips to perform their functions so that they do not draw from your system’s RAM in order to operate properly.  This means that you should know how much RAM your computer has before you go about selecting a suitable card.  The more expensive cards have the resident memory which is ideal, while if you go for a much cheaper card, you may find that it draws too much on your computer’s RAM.

Each card has a GPU or graphics processing unit which is similar to your computer’s CPU.  The GPU on your card processes the data in parallel lines which are referred to as “pipelines”.  The more of these pipelines that the particular card has, the better the speed at which it will process your data.

These cards are used in conjunction with built in fans because they tend to generate quite a bit of heat.  The fans can be pretty noisy, but you can also have the option of purchasing a card that does not have a fan.  The disadvantage of these types of cards is that they tend to take up more space in your system.

Some cards come with an external port to allow more monitors to be connected if you like to play games.  It may have an S video out option so that you can connect your PC to your television if you like to watch streaming videos.  The options are endless, you just need to narrow down your requirements when you are choosing your particular card.

The amount that you can expect to spend will vary depending on what you like to use  your computer for.  If you are a heavy gamer, you should opt for a more expensive card to render more accurate images.  If you only use your computer for basic purposes, you can save money on your card and go with a lower cost option.
